About Vedic Literature

The Vedas

Vedas have been divided into four different types, they are Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda.

Rigveda is Knowledge oriented, Yajurveda is application oriented, Samaveda is devotion oriented and Atharvaveda deals with science.

Upavedas

Arthaveda-It deals with the methods of devoloping the wealth of a nation through trade and commerce.

Dhanurveda– It deals with manufacturing and using methods of different types of warfare for the protection of the nation.

Gandharvaveda-It deals with Art and Science of Music.

Ayurveda–It deals with unfolding the secrets of health and longevity of mankind.

Vedangas

Shikshaa–It deals with the science of pronunciation.

Kalpa– Kalpa soothras are(aphorisms) are formulated to precisely enumerate the application of Veda mantras in Vedic Rites.

Vyakarana(Grammar) – It deals with the science of understanding Vedic Language.

Nirukta – It deals with elucidation of connotations.

Chandas – It deals with proper understanding of pronunciation of Veda mantras.

Jyotish – It deals with the science of Astronomy.

Darshanas

Nyaya-It discusses the fundamental truth through the science of reasoning.

Vysheshika– Vysheshika is regarded as similar philosophy to Nyaya and develops metaphysics and ontology.

Samkhya– It provides a rational analysis to the fundamental truth.

Yoga– It provides a practical aphorisms or sutras for the realization of fundamental truth.

Purva Mimamsa– This philosophy can be known as Karma Mimamsa as it seeks to explain the rites and ceremonies taught in the Vedas.

Uttara Mimamsa/Vedanta– The Vedanta Sutras(aphorisms) aid us to reason and understand the ‘Self’.
